LOSING THE EDGE: THE VERY BRIEF HISTORY OF EDITORIAL ART
Hosted by S.L. Harrison, Ph.D., and Gail Shivel, Ph.D.
Harrison is the author of several books, including The Editorial Art of Edmund Duffy and Florida's Editorial Cartoonists, and was a contributor to Graphic Opinions: Editorial Cartoonists and Their Art. He is a professor of communication at the University of Miami.
Shivel is the editor of New Yorker Profiles 1925-1992 and has served as National Star Trek Examiner for Examiner.com. She teaches English part-time at the University of Miami.
Panel Description: Will the world still have room for editorial art? Shivel explores the notion media owners have today that if something moves and has color, people will look at it, as against the genuine artistic potential of editorial opinion expressed in graphic form. Using examples of editorial art going back to the eighteenth century, she discusses the reception of this form of expression and its eventual (and perhaps all too brief) recognition as a true art form. Harrison shows examples of controversial cartoons from past decades that hauled distressing subjects before the eyes of the public--lynching, prejudice, corruption, warmongering and jingoism--and questions the effect on society of a media that self-censors, and the literally dwindling space for strong opinions coupled with strong graphic art.

The year is 1949 and the Great War (WWI) was never finished; thus the battle is continuing some thirty-five years later! It features the men and women of the 42nd Marine Special Forces, led by John MacNeal, and the mysterious and deadly Obscura Korps of the Reich locked in a struggle to recover the Obscura Cardinal Stones. Using the unique and innovative "Pathfinding" system, you will engage your units in tactical maneuvers and dramatic action. Everything you need is provided. Beginners Welcome!

TITLE: Devil’s In the Details
GAME SYSTEM: Pathfinder RPG
MAX # OF PLAYERS: 6
DECRIPTION: The local town has a secret, but not everyone can handle the truth. The well on the other side of the isle has a secret, too, and some will do anything to protect it. TITLE: Classic Battletech
GAME SYSTEM: FASA Games Miniatures Game
MAX # OF PLAYERS: 8
DESCRIPTION: It is the 31st century, a time of endless wars that rage across human-occupied space. As star empires clash, these epic wars are won and lost by BattleMechs, 30-foot-tall humanoid metal titans bristling with lasers, autocannons and dozens of other lethal weapons; enough firepower to level entire city blocks. Your elite force of MechWarriors drives these juggernauts into battle, proudly holding your faction’s flag high, intent on expanding the power and glory of your realm. At their beck and call are the support units of armored vehicles, power armored infantry, aerospace fighters and more, wielded by a MechWarrior's skillful command to aid him in ultimate victory. Will they become legends, or forgotten casualties? Only your skill and luck will determine their fate! Everything needed to play is provided. Beginners welcome.

TITLE: Who knew, Blue?
GAME SYSTEM: Margaret Weis Productions RPG
MAX # OF PLAYERS: 6
DESCRIPTION: You and your crew catch a break when you land a simple pick-up/drop-off gig with only two packages.  You are guaranteed that upon their arrival you will receive enough riches to buy your very own floating island on Bellerophon.  Screw it up and the largest private army in the verse will hunt you down and make you pay...a lot. Two hours into the black your ship is attacked and one of the packages is now missing. In your pursuit of the ship that attacked you, a random Alliance Cruiser has contacted your ship for an inspection. If they learn of your cargo - you're humped!  Soon after the attack your contact learns of the missing package and feels obligated to tell the buyer (to save their own skin) and the buyer wants their cargo STAT!  If the buyer intercepts the gig, you and your crew may be killed and if you're dead, you can't buy nice things.  So, can you find the other package and arrive in the time allotted for the job before the Alliance and the buyer find you?  Probably not, but you're still flyin' and you'll give it your best shot!  Pre-generated characters. Beginners welcome!

TITLE: The Games We Play
GAME SYSTEM: D20 System RPG
MAX # OF PLAYERS: 6
DESCRIPTION:  Trapped in a pantheon of dreams for more than ten years without sleep, you no longer find your childhood games as fun anymore.  In fact you only want to go home, but your only hope of leaving this dreamscape is to wake up!  The scars have healed leaving the reminders of the last game played.  Your broken bones reset after the pain and suffering have dissipated and you have no idea what pain awaits you in the next game played.  You play the games because the god, Lease-Pha'Il Ala-Lando, keeps you in a jar with a lid full of poked holes and makes you do it.  When you refuse he may or may not make you, but punishment always follows.  The chance of you getting out requires another game of cat & mouse.  Outplay the god by perfecting the games you play and prolonging the sessions.  Use the extra time you have to avoid being hurt, then multitask by actively searching the different arenas to find the way out.  The final game will require all your skill and endurance to be able to get to the exit before the god learns of what you're doing and puts you back into the jar. Pre-generated characters. Beginners welcome!
